Do you know the Etang de Berre?
Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur is a magnificent region with breathtaking scenery. Today, we’re taking you to the Etang de Berre, which connects to the Mediterranean Sea via the Caronte canal. It lies between Arles, Marseille and Aix-en-Provence. If you arrive by plane, you’ll have the chance to observe it from the skies over Marignane.
The Etang de Berre is the largest pond in Europe.
With a surface area of 155 km², the Etang de Berre is the largest saltwater lake in Europe. Over the years, this has given rise to an exceptional underwater ecosystem. Many birds nest here, and you’ll be able to observe pink flamingos. The pond is also a great place for water sports. It has the advantage of waters warmer than the sea, limited wave height and very little current.
Etang de Berre tourist villages
Numerous charming Provencal villages are located near the Etang de Berre. Here you can discover the archeological site of Sainte-Blaise, the village of Saint-Chamas with its remarkable heritage and troglodyte houses, and of course the town of Martigues and its many artists.
